East Okhotsk Scenic Byway
With Shiretoko, a World natural heritage site, and Akan, a national park,
this route will enable you to encounter Hokkaido's primitive landscape
and a rustic atmosphere.
National Highway 244
This is a straight road running across a sand bar that separates Lake
Tofutsu from the Sea of Okhotsk. You can simultaneously enjoy both the
views of the panoramic horizon and of the lake that is apporozimately
28Km in circumference and 900 hectares in area. It is a driving course
feautred by successive superb views.
Lake Notoro
The Ubaranai District on the south bank of Lake Notoro has large colonies
of glasswort. They are tined red in autumn, making the shore look as though
it is covered with a red carpet and thereby creating a fantastic area with the
blue sky contrasting sharply with the red lakeside.
Shiretoko Odan Road(National Highway 334)
This road connects Shari and Rausu towns. From Shiretoko Pass, the apex of
the road, you can command a dynamic view of both the Pacific Ocean and the
Sea of Okhotsk while sensing the overwhelming presence of Mt. Rausu-dake.
